Walking Boot

. . .

A walking boot is an orthopedic device used to immobilize the movement of the foot and ankle when walking. The primary goal is to stabilize the foot and ankle to aid in healing post-operatively or to avoid surgery altogether. They are also known as walking braces, walking casts, moon boots or CAM boots.

Walking boots can be either tall or short. The tall version can be more effective at immobilizing the foot and ankle but may also be less comfortable to wear, especially for shorter individuals. The short version provides greater wearing comfort and is easier to walk in, but generally provides less support and stabilization of the foot and ankle.

They are also either pneumatic or non-pneumatic. Pneumatic boots use an internal air bladder in the lining of the boot. This provides additional support and compression to the foot and ankle, which better controls any inflammation along with greater pain relief and shock reduction to the foot. Non-pneumatic boots do not use an air bladder. They decrease pain and protect the foot and ankle for enhanced rehabilitation by immobilizing and stabilizing the injured area.
